NIDC Is On The Case

NIDC’s Housing and Community Department fights for tenants everyday. Just ask, Valleyin Benjamin a resident of the Norwood section of the Bronx. In May, she noticed a spike in her Con Edison gas bill. Her balance due had shot up to $10,000.

With the help of NIDC Tenant/Community Organizer, Leah James, Ms. Benjamin began investigating and discovered that the landlord had been using her name for the building’s gas line. Ms. James promptly contacted Con Edison to schedule an inspection, which confirmed the billing error to be true and furthermore identified illegal piping throughout the building.

In response, Leah James took the case the New York State Public Service Commission who looked into the situation and cleared Ms. Benjamin’s balance, transferring her charges back to the landlord.
