MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS (VIVS)
Our Very Important Volunteer (VIV) program engages middle school youth to participate as young volunteers. They assist staff in leading groups, are mentored by the young adult staff, and are good candidates for future program employment.

SPECIAL EVENTS & SERVICES
Youth can participate in special field trips to local museums, the Bronx Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, etc. All the students participate in two or three shows a year with music, dance, and drama performed for the entire afterschool program.

The program has a social worker to work with youth and families facing challenges and to assist families in securing benefits and additional services. The social worker meets with each group of students once a week to help build social skills and help the children understand each other, their human commonalities and their cultural differences.

THE STAFF
Our direct staff is mostly made up of college students from the community. Many attended the program as youth. Direct Staff receive training in childhood development, program implementation, nutrition and health, safety and security procedures, and more. Senior Staff have been with NIDC for more than two years and receive additional training in serving children with physical or emotional challenges, behavior management and discipline, and child maltreatment identification and prevention. Our staff is eager to learn and grow.

SUMMER CAMP

NIDC operates a summer camp for students who just completed grades K-5 at St. Lucy’s School on the corner of Bronxwood and Mace. Camp registration begins in late April/early May. The program has 200 free slots and 50 additional slots for ACS vouchers or a fee. The program operates from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, for eight weeks in July and August.

SUMMER PROGRAM:
Summer campers are taken to Lasker Pool in Central Park to swim twice a week. Each week they have a trip to a major destination like a museum or the Coney Island Aquarium. And they also go to smaller destinations once a week, like a puppet show in a nearby park or to the local library for story hour. “In house” days focus on keeping their reading and math skills sharp, doing crafts, and other activities typical of summer camp.

SUMMER STAFF:
The majority of our summer staff are drawn from our afterschool program. Going on trips requires additional staff which we get from the NYC Summer Youth Employment program. We have our own aquatics director and lifeguards to watch over the campers at the pool.
