For the last several years, students at Neighborhood Initiatives Development Corporation’s SONYC afterschool program at PS 89 have been spending their afternoons learning how hard cheerleading really is. Through the experience of working hard, performing, learning teamwork and leadership skills they have learned to apply these lessons to life, maturing through the process.
After a string of victories, The Universal Cheerleaders Association has extended the team an offer to attend a national camp in Orlando, Florida on December 28th. For 5 days and 4 nights, the team will be training and rehearsing in preparation for their nationally televised performance at the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve (and visit Disney World).
This opportunity isn’t free as each team must pay their own way. The cost including airfare, lodging, food and activities is $40,000 for the twenty Cheerleaders, coach and staff.
All of the families are working to contribute as much as they can but don’t have the resources to make this happen alone. With your help, our young people will have the opportunity to represent the Bronx, not just themselves, but all of us.
