Support for Renters: Know Your Rights & Stay Secure 

We are here to help renters in the Bronx navigate housing challenges and protect their rights.  

Whether you're facing eviction, rent overcharges, unsafe living conditions, or landlord disputes, our team provides free tenant advocacy, housing court support, benefit access, and mediation services. We also offer workshops and tenant organizing assistance to empower residents to take action for safer, more stable housing.

  • Facing eviction or struggling with a housing issue? NIDC provides free support to help Bronx renters stay in their homes.  

    • Housing Court Help – Guidance and support for tenants facing unwarranted evictions, rent overcharges, unresolved repairs, or landlord disputes.  

    • Tenant Advocacy – NIDC can serve as your “tenant advocate”, assisting in understanding your rights and navigating Housing Court. 

    • Applications & Recertifications – Help with rental assistance programs, lease renewals, and benefit applications. 

    Please note, our staff is here to act as your advocate only; NIDC staff are not attorneys and do not provide legal representation.

  • Our housing specialists provide free tenant support, including building inspections, arranging repairs, resolving landlord tenant disputes, correcting rent overcharges, and applying for benefits and entitlements.  

    • Landlord Mediation – Assistance in resolving disputes, stopping harassment, lease renewals, correcting rent overcharges, and negotiating repairs. 

    • Building Assistance – Help arranging inspections, addressing maintenance issues, and resolving mold or pest concerns. 

    • Housing Benefit Access – Support with Section 8, SCRIE, DRIE, and other rental assistance programs. We can also help with SNAP and other Benefits Access. 

  • We are here to empower Bronx residents to take charge of their communities through tenant and community associations. We provide technical assistance, advocacy support, and workshops to help tenants organize, address housing concerns, pool their power, and push for meaningful change. 

    • Workshops – Learn about tenants’ rights, mortgage foreclosure, and other key housing topics. See our calendar for upcoming events, or contact us to request one in your community. 

    • Tenant Associations& Community Organizations – Technical assistance to form and strengthen tenant councils to advocate for safety, security, and necessary repairs.
