FSN Network: From Lullabies to Literacy–Building Your Child’s Communication Skills

Parents and caregivers joined together at PS 77 to explore how music, play and daily conversation build early language and literacy skills. In this workshop, everyone learned practical, low-cost strategies—like interactive reading, rhyming games, and talking during routines—to support speech development and bonding.

The session focused on:

  • Building caregiver confidence with simple, low-cost activities that promote speech, language, and learning at home.

  • Increasing awareness of developmental milestones for speech, comprehension, and early reading readiness.

  • Providing practical tools to strengthen bonding, emotional connection, and language development.

  • Recognizing early signs of communication delays and understanding when to seek professional support.

  • Promoting literacy as a joyful, culturally responsive, relationship-centered practice—not just an academic task.

The evening was filled with engaging discussions about literacy and communication skills, and as a result of this workshop, families:

  1. Gained insight into how lullabies, storytelling, conversation, and repetition build early literacy skills.

  2. Learned age-appropriate language milestones and realistic expectations for speech development.

  3. Understood the impact of screen exposure on language development and explored healthier communication habits.

  4. Practiced strategies like talking during daily routines (mealtime, bedtime, bath time).

  5. Discovered fun activities such as games, singing, and rhyming.

  6. Explored interactive reading techniques.

  7. Learned to ask open-ended questions to extend language and thinking skills.
