A Season of Growth, Creativity, and Community at NIDC

Across NIDC programs, recent months have been filled with moments of growth, creativity, and connection. From youth development initiatives to family-centered workshops and community events, these experiences reflect a shared commitment to empowering residents and strengthening neighborhoods across the Bronx.

At NIDC’s Family Support Network, parents and caregivers came together for the virtual session Neurodiversity and Your Child: Myths vs Realities, an engaging workshop focused on dispelling common misconceptions and building understanding around neurodiversity. During the session, families explored key insights while also participating in a collaborative group coaching experience, where parents shared questions and supported one another with guidance and resources. With participants joining from across New York City and beyond, the workshop created a dynamic and inclusive space for connection, learning, and community building. Through open discussion and shared experiences, families gained valuable tools and a deeper sense of confidence in supporting their neurodivergent children.

Youth development continued to take shape at PS MS 89 through the Sexual Risk Avoidance Education program. Throughout the cycle, students engaged in thoughtful discussions around topics such as communication, decision-making, and personal responsibility. A central theme of the program encouraged participants to make proud choices that align with their values and goals. As the program concluded, students demonstrated increased confidence, stronger decision-making skills, and a deeper sense of self respect. Their reflections highlighted both the challenges and the growth that came from engaging with meaningful conversations, reinforcing the program’s lasting impact.

Creativity and expression were on full display at PS 96 during the Annual Art Gala, where students transformed their space into an immersive Under the Sea experience. Through hands on projects and storytelling activities, participants showcased their imagination while building confidence in their creative abilities. Families were invited to explore the exhibits, creating an interactive experience that celebrated both student achievement and community support.

Students at PS 77 also had the opportunity to engage in a unique and inspiring learning experience during a special visit from dermatologist and author Dr Haley Heibel. Through a live reading of her book, Embrace Your Skin, Embrace Yourself, students explored topics related to self-care, skin health, and confidence. The interactive session allowed participants to ask questions and engage in meaningful conversation, helping them better understand the importance of caring for themselves while building self esteem. Each student received a signed copy of the book, making the experience both personal and memorable.

Community connection extended beyond youth programming through events like the Advisory Board Soul Train Party, where residents came together for an evening of music, dancing, and celebration. The event created a vibrant and welcoming space for community members to connect, enjoy shared experiences, and build relationships in a positive setting. Moments like these highlight the importance of creating opportunities for joy and engagement within the community.

Together, these experiences represent more than individual events. They reflect a broader commitment to supporting the growth of youth, strengthening families, and fostering meaningful connections. Through education, creativity, and community engagement, NIDC continues to create spaces where residents can learn, connect, and thrive.
