Advancing Affordable Housing Preservation Through Collaboration

On March 5, 2026, NIDC participated in an Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development member event focused on affordable housing preservation. The convening brought together more than 60 housing organizations from across New York City to engage in conversation with HPD Commissioner Dina Levy about the future of affordable housing.

The event opened with networking over breakfast, allowing housing advocates, nonprofit organizations, and development professionals to connect and share perspectives on the challenges facing housing preservation across the city.

Commissioner Levy then led a discussion focused on the needs of distressed housing, nonprofit owned housing, and the broader efforts required to stabilize and secure existing affordable housing. Participants were invited to openly share their experiences working on the ground and to highlight the challenges communities face in maintaining safe and stable housing.

Throughout the morning, organizations discussed potential solutions and strategies to strengthen housing preservation efforts under the city’s current administration. The conversation emphasized the importance of collaboration between nonprofit housing organizations, policymakers, and community partners to protect the affordable housing that residents rely on.

The afternoon continued with breakout discussions where participants expanded on ideas from the morning session and shared additional recommendations for supporting long term housing stability across New York City.

For NIDC, participating in spaces like this is an important part of advancing housing equity. By engaging in dialogue with policymakers and housing leaders, we continue advocating for policies and initiatives that support the preservation of affordable housing and the stability of the communities we serve.
