Building Teamwork and Problem Solving Skills at Mission Escape Rooms
NIDC middle school students stepped into a fast-paced, interactive learning experience during a trip to Mission Escape Rooms on April 9, 2026.
Participants from PS/MS 89 were divided into small groups and challenged to work together in themed escape rooms, where they solved puzzles, uncovered clues, and completed tasks within a limited time. Each room required strong communication, strategic thinking, and collaboration in order to progress through the challenge.
As the experience unfolded, students naturally stepped into different roles within their teams. Some emerged as leaders guiding decision-making, while others focused on solving puzzles or coordinating communication between group members. The time-based nature of the activity encouraged quick thinking and adaptability, pushing students to work together under pressure.
Beyond the excitement of the activity, the trip reinforced key goals of youth programming, including teamwork, logical reasoning, and effective communication. Students were able to apply these skills in real time, building confidence while navigating challenges in a supportive and engaging environment.
Experiences like this provide meaningful opportunities for youth to grow outside of the classroom. By combining learning with hands-on activities, NIDC continues to create spaces where students can strengthen essential life skills while having fun.
