Celebrating Student Voice at The Great Debate
Confidence, critical thinking, and student voice took center stage at The Great Debate, held on April 15, 2026, at PS 96.
The event marked the culmination of months of preparation, during which NIDC 5th grade students worked closely with Debate4All, a group of high school students from District 11 dedicated to teaching the art of debate. Through this partnership, participants developed skills in advocacy, public speaking, and critical thinking, building the confidence to express their ideas clearly and thoughtfully.
At the event, students explored the timely question: Should U.S. public schools ban sugary foods? They rose to the challenge with impressive poise, speaking in front of an audience, thinking on their feet, and delivering well-reasoned arguments. Their willingness to take risks and engage respectfully with one another reflected both their growth and dedication.
The success of the event was made possible through strong collaboration. Special thanks go to Debate4All for their mentorship, Mr. Ehrlich for supporting PS 96’s Debate Club, and Ms. Yasli, the school’s Community Coordinator, whose planning and partnership helped bring the event to life.
Families also played an important role in making the event meaningful, showing up to support and celebrate the students’ achievements.
Events like The Great Debate highlight the importance of creating spaces where young people can develop their voices, build confidence, and engage in meaningful dialogue. NIDC is proud of all students for their hard work and looks forward to continuing to support opportunities that empower youth to lead and express themselves.
