Community Health Fair with Einstein Service-Learning Students at PS/MS 89

On October 23, 2025, NIDC Afterschool proudly partnered with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine to host a vibrant Community Health Fair at PS/MS 89, as part of the Einstein Service-Learning Program. This special event also served as our “Lights On Afterschool” Open House and a celebration of our October “Health Hub” initiative — bringing together families, students, and community partners for an afternoon centered on wellness, education, and connection.

The fair welcomed over 150 children, ages 5 to 14, who eagerly explored a series of interactive health stations led by Einstein medical students. Topics included:

  • The Importance of Primary Care

  • Nutrition

  • Rethink Your Drink

  • Exercise and Active Lifestyle

  • Mental Health

  • Children’s Health

  • Asthma in the Bronx

Each station featured hands-on activities, demonstrations, and fun giveaways designed to make health education engaging and memorable for youth. The Einstein Service-Learning students did an outstanding job connecting with participants and making complex health topics accessible and fun.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Einstein Service-Learning team and their leadership — Dr. Lauren Roth, Holly Nuthmann, and Maya Rivera — for their dedication and partnership. It was also inspiring to witness collaboration across community leadership, with Jamie Gonzalez, Parent Coordinator at PS/MS 89, and Dr. Roth from Einstein, both NIDC Board Members, coming together to support this initiative.

This Health Fair was a powerful celebration of our Health Hub initiative and Lights On Afterschool, showcasing the strength of community partnerships and the vital role afterschool programs play in promoting youth health and well-being.
