Fall Crafts, Community Connections, and Wellness at Union Street Flats

Fall is a season of change, connection, and new beginnings! On September 29, 2026, Neighborhood Initiatives Development Corporation (NIDC) welcomed residents of Union Street Flats at 1702 Union Street for its September Harvest Social, an afternoon dedicated to creativity, community engagement, and mental health awareness.

Held from 12 PM to 2 PM, the gathering brought together 18 residents for an opportunity to meet their neighbors, enjoy refreshments, and participate in festive fall activities.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees created fall-themed suncatcher and charm keychains while connecting with NIDC staff and learning more about the services available through Tenant Support Services (TSS). The event also provided an opportunity to welcome residents who had not attended the building's previous open house.

In recognition of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, NIDC incorporated mental health education into the gathering, sharing information about local mental health clinics and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Residents also received an Affirmation Buddy, a small figurine accompanied by a daily affirmation card designed to offer encouragement and positivity.

Beyond mental health resources, attendees received information about community services related to employment, food assistance, diaper banks, education, and legal support.

One of the afternoon's most meaningful moments came when a resident expressed interest in establishing a neighborhood association. Reflecting on the strong community connections that existed more than 20 years ago, he shared his hopes of bringing neighbors together and rebuilding that sense of unity. NIDC staff are working with him to explore the resources and information needed to help bring this vision to life.

Residents also shared positive feedback about the gathering, expressed excitement for future events, and discussed neighborhood concerns with NIDC staff, who are working alongside building management to explore potential solutions.

Through events like the September Harvest Social, NIDC continues to create opportunities for residents to connect, access essential resources, and take an active role in shaping stronger, healthier communities.
