NIDC's Housing Education Series Empowers Bronx Residents

Throughout June, NIDC's Social Services department partnered with HPD to host a series of free housing education workshops at Bronx House, providing residents with practical information, trusted resources, and expert guidance on navigating today's housing landscape.

The three-part series addressed some of the most important topics facing tenants and individuals seeking affordable housing. Each workshop was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence needed to understand their rights, access available resources, and make informed housing decisions.

The series began with the Tenant's Know Your Rights Workshop, where residents learned about the rights of rent-stabilized and fair market tenants. An HPD representative explained New York's Good Cause Eviction law, answered questions from attendees, and shared practical steps residents can take to protect themselves and advocate for their rights.

The second workshop, Navigate Housing Connect, offered a live, step-by-step demonstration of the Housing Connect application process. Participants followed along in real time as an HPD presenter walked through each stage of the application, helping residents better understand how to successfully apply for affordable housing opportunities while avoiding common mistakes.

The series concluded with Housing Discrimination, an educational workshop focused on recognizing unlawful housing practices and understanding the protections available under fair housing laws. Residents learned what constitutes housing discrimination, how to report concerns, and where to find support if they experience unfair treatment.

Together, these workshops provided community members with valuable tools to navigate housing challenges with greater confidence. Attendees had opportunities to ask questions, engage directly with housing professionals, and connect with resources designed to promote long-term housing stability.
