The Art of Leadership: NIDC Hosts 5th Annual Leadership Retreat
On June 18, NIDC's Youth & Family Department proudly hosted The Art of Leadership, its fifth annual Leadership Retreat for Youth Supervisors and Emerging Leaders. Held at the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) conference facilities in the Bronx, the full-day retreat brought together leaders from across NIDC's youth programs for a day dedicated to professional growth, collaboration, and reflection.
Over the past five years, the annual retreat has become a cornerstone of the department's commitment to developing strong, mission-driven leaders. Each year introduces a new leadership theme designed to strengthen management skills, encourage innovation, and support the continued growth of staff who serve youth and families throughout the community.
Facilitated by consultants Allison Wittenberg and Cat Lum of Change Impact, this year's retreat featured interactive workshops, team-building activities, and engaging discussions centered on adaptive leadership, effective communication, self-awareness, navigating change, and building inclusive, responsive teams. Participants also had the opportunity to share experiences, celebrate successes, discuss challenges, and exchange best practices with colleagues from across NIDC's programs.
As NIDC continues to expand its Youth & Family Services with new school partnerships and additional program sites, this year's focus on leadership was especially meaningful. Sessions explored how thoughtful leadership supports organizational growth while maintaining consistency, fostering innovation, strengthening program culture, and ensuring high-quality services for the communities NIDC serves.
Beyond professional development, the retreat reinforced the importance of collaboration and shared purpose. By creating space for meaningful dialogue and collective learning, participants strengthened connections across programs while reaffirming NIDC's mission of empowering youth, supporting families, and building stronger communities.
As the department celebrates the fifth year of this leadership tradition, The Art of Leadership continues to reflect NIDC's investment in its people. Participants left the retreat inspired, energized, and equipped with practical strategies to lead with confidence, authenticity, and purpose as they prepare for the upcoming program year.
