Celebrating a Year of Growth: End-of-Year Moments from Across Our Afterschool Programs

As the school year came to a close, NIDC’s Youth Programs team marked the moment with a series of joyful, reflective events across a few of our sites. These celebrations honored the growth, creativity, and resilience of our students while giving them space to share memories, express gratitude, and look ahead to what’s next. Here’s a look at how three of our sites wrapped up the year.

PS 483: Magic, Memories, and Looking Ahead

The final celebration took place on June 20 at PS 483, where students and families enjoyed the Abra-KID-Abra End of Year Celebration. The event featured a live magic show, complete with a bunny the students got to pet, followed by face painting, popcorn, cotton candy, and a lively game of musical chairs. Students also took time to share their favorite afterschool memories, reflecting on a year full of learning and laughter. The energy was high, and the excitement for next year was already building.

PS 105: A Sweet Send-Off

On June 18, the afterschool community at PS 105 came together for an End of the Year Celebration filled with music, pizza, and heartfelt goodbyes. Students and staff reflected on the progress made throughout the year and the friendships built along the way. Some students were so moved by the moment that they teared up, saying they couldn’t wait to return next year. The celebration was a reminder of how deeply these programs shaped students’ sense of belonging and joy.

PS/MS 89: Celebrating Growth and Learning

On June 12, students at PS/MS 89 gathered for an End of the Year SRAE Participant Appreciation event, for those students who completed the SRAE (Sexual Risk Avoidance Education) Program. After completing the year’s curriculum, students shared feedback on what they learned and how the program impacted them. Staff handed out gift bags and additional resources, and everyone enjoyed a McDonald’s treat to close out the afternoon. It was a simple but meaningful way to recognize the effort students put in all year, and to let them know their voices matter.

These end-of-year events were more than just celebrations, they were affirmations of the relationships, routines, and moments that made the school year meaningful. As we head into summer, we carry with us the stories and smiles of students who showed up, grew, and made each program their own.
