La Calle Es Tuya: A Celebration of Culture, Commerce, and Community in East Tremont

East Tremont Avenue came alive with rhythm, flavor, and community spirit during La Calle Es Tuya, a two-part street activation event hosted by NIDC’s Economic Development department.

Designed to uplift local culture and support small businesses, the event transformed the corridor into a vibrant, walkable destination filled with music, dance, and meaningful conversations.

On two sunny afternoons in June, first along East Tremont Avenue & Arthur Avenue, and then at Walter Gladwin Park, neighbors gathered to celebrate the heart of their community. The event’s mission was twofold: to boost foot traffic and economic activity for local merchants, and to introduce the newly formed East Tremont Merchants Association to residents and business owners.

At the first event, the streets were filled with energy as The Groove Terminal Band NYC delivered a lively set of Latin music that had families dancing in the open air. The event created a festive atmosphere that encouraged connection and pride in the neighborhood.

The second event, held just a few blocks away, featured a powerful cultural performance by the Bombazo Jr. Dance Company. Their traditional Puerto Rican Bomba, rooted in the legacy of enslaved African ancestors, captivated the crowd. NIDC staff members Brandon and Henry engaged attendees in conversations about the Merchants Association and its goals.

Community feedback was heartfelt and affirming. Several attendees shared that events like these are rare in East Tremont, while others fondly recalled similar celebrations from their youth. These moments of recognition and nostalgia underscored the importance of reclaiming public space for joy, culture, and connection.

La Calle Es Tuya was more than a street fair... it was a statement of unity, resilience, and the power of local pride. As East Tremont continues to grow and evolve, events like this remind us that the heart of any neighborhood is its people.
