Cheer, Champions, and Camp: A Season of Growth and Glory for PS89
This spring and summer, NIDC’s Youth Programs team celebrated two incredible milestones with the PS89 cheerleaders and their peers from New Initiative High School. From national victories to skill-building retreats, these events showcased the power of teamwork, dedication, and community spirit.
Hershey Park Nationals: A First-Place Finish
This April, the PS89 cheerleaders traveled to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to compete in the Hershey Park Open Nationals. Their goal? To place first in Level 3 competitive cheer... and they did just that.
The team delivered a flawless “hit zero” routine, rising to the top among 50 competing teams. But the trip was about more than just the win. Between rollercoaster rides, card games, and bonding time at their shared Airbnb, the weekend felt like a celebratory sleepover. The highlight? That unforgettable moment when all their hard work paid off with a national title.
Cheer Camp: Building Skills and Spirit
In June, the PS89 Panthers and New Initiative High School cheerleaders headed back to Pennsylvania for a multi-day cheer camp. The camp focused on developing new skills, refining techniques, and preparing for the upcoming season.
Led by UCA staff, the teams trained in stunting, jumps, dancing, and spirited performance. Coaches also took part in workshops to strengthen their leadership for the year ahead. The experience culminated in a series of awards: PS89 earned trophies for best all-around cheer, sportsmanship, and routine, while the Sunday’s team was recognized for best all-around pyramid.
One of the most memorable moments? Winning the coveted “banana” on the first night, fun camp tradition awarded to the most spirited team.
