NYS Children’s Asthma Initiative of the American Lung Association Host ASthma Education Workshop For NIDC
During off school time on Veteran's Day, the NYS Children's Asthma Initiative of the American Lung Association facilitated an engaging and informative workshop focused on asthma awareness and response for NIDC Youth Program staff in our afterschool programs. The session equipped 32 staff from across all our NIDC sites with essential knowledge about asthma triggers, early warning signs, and best practices for assisting youth who may experience asthma-related challenges while in our care.
During the workshop, participants learned to identify common environmental triggers—such as dust, exercise, cold air, and allergens—and discussed practical strategies for reducing exposure within afterschool settings. Trainers also reviewed proper use of inhalers, the importance of asthma action plans, and steps to take during an asthma episode to ensure student safety.
This training strengthens our commitment to providing a safe, supportive environment for all youth. We are grateful to the American Lung Association for sharing their expertise and helping the NIDC team feel more confident and prepared to deal with a health issue that affects many of our youth.
We look forward to bringing American Lung Association back to work with directly with students under NIDC’s Health Hub initiative.
Together, we’re building a healthier community—one breath at a time.
